Salem School Transition Plan

At Naugatuck Public Schools, we are committed to ensuring a smooth and supportive transition for all students, families, and staff as we implement the Salem School Transition Plan. Our focus is on maintaining academic excellence, fostering a positive school culture, and providing clear, consistent communication throughout the process.

To support this transition, we have established both a District Transition Team and School-Based Transition Teams. These teams will work collaboratively to address key areas of the transition, provide guidance, and ensure that all stakeholders have the resources and support they need.

Student Engagement

Several activities will be planned to support a successful transition for the students, their families, and the neighborhoods. Currently, the principals are working to develop activities focused on teamwork and culture-building activities for students and families. Additionally, schools that have family events planned throughout the Spring will include incoming families. Receiving schools should be mindful of events planned at Salem and Hop Brook so that students can participate with both schools as appropriate.

Additionally, Salem School staff will collaborate with receiving school staff to thoughtfully place students, prioritizing opportunities for Salem students to be in classrooms with familiar peers while ensuring balanced and appropriate placements.

Community Engagement

Community Engagement is essential to support a successful transition for students and families as it creates transparency, fosters trust, and provides a platform for collaboration. Involving the community helps address concerns, gather input, and create a shared sense of ownership in the process. A well-engaged community helps create a smoother transition and strengthens relationships between the school district and its families, ultimately leading to better outcomes for students.

The district and school transition teams are dedicated to honoring the legacy of Salem School by creating meaningful opportunities for reflection and celebration. Plans may include commemoration events such as a farewell gathering, a memory book, and a plaque installation. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to document their experiences and memories through creative projects, including writing, art, and video. These efforts aim to preserve Salem’s impact and ensure its legacy lives on within the community.

Transportation

A primary area of focus for Transportation staff will be utilizing residence information for students within the attendance zone boundary maps. Clear communication with families will ensure a smooth transition, minimizing disruptions and ensuring student safety throughout the process. It is recommended communication regarding attendance zones occur prior to the regularly scheduled August date.
